Kolkata: A sexually explicit rape threat on Facebook, which triggered an outrage on social media platforms, prompted Kolkata Police cyber cell to arrest a 24-year-old engineer on Monday after the aggrieved woman reached out to the police on it’s facebook page.
Chakraborty had targeted the girl, who is currently studying in Australia, after she deleted one of his comments on her Facebook post, prompting him to post a series of messages threatening her and her brother with rape and dire consequences.
The police said Chakraborty had admitted to his guilt, after which criminal proceedings were initiated. His mobile phone has also been seized, the department tweeted on Tuesday.
“Acting on the complaint of the lady on Facebook, we arrested Agniswar from AE block in Salt Lake. He had outraged the modesty of the victim by posting sexually explicit comments on Facebook and used a 27-week-old profile picture to comment. These points to the fact that he might be stalking her from some time. He went to the extent of threatening the lady and her brother with rape and dire consequences. During the time of arrest, police seized the mobile phone used by Agniswar. He was produced at a local court in Kolkata on Tuesday ,” said joint CP (Crime) Vishal Garg.
Senior criminal lawyer Milon Mukherjee said, “For any cognizable offence, mere knowledge is enough for police to act. IT Act, 2008 deems such comments on an online medium to be a criminal offence punishable with a three-year prison term and a fine at the first instance itself.”
A change.org petition has been started and at the time of making this post, has 75,396 signatures demanding “Strict punishment for Agniswar Chakraborty to set an example once and for all” as the petition reads on the website.
