A Powerful, Shallow Earthquake Struck Southern Taiwan


A shallow 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck before  04:00 am on saturday , has toppled buildings in the south Taiwanese city of Tainan, killing at least five people.

Rescuers in the southern Taiwanese city of Tainan pulled out 221 people from two residential high-rises that collapsed , leaving still others trapped inside. Tainan city emergency center declared 5 people dead,including a 10-day-old infant and a 40-year-old man. Who were pulled out of a 17-story Wei Guan residential building .

Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and often sees tremors. It was located some 22 miles (36 kilometers) southeast of Yujing, and struck about 6 miles (10 kilometers) underground, The quake was shallow, meaning its effects would have been amplified and There have also been at least five aftershocks., the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.


President Ma Ying-jeou promised an “all-out effort” to rescue people and  Shelters would be set up for those who had lost their homes in the city of two million people, he said,when he arrived in the city.

Firefighters and soldiers rushed to the site with ladders, cranes and other equipment and extracted terrified  survivors from the buildings that were lying on one side of the road.


The Tainan city government  said  221 people have been rescued to far, and that 115 were hospitalized. It said two people suffered cardiac arrest.

Most people were caught asleep when temblor struck and one of the two towers had 256 people living in 92 units,  And the  second 16-story high-rise nearby also collapsed, and more than 30 survivors have been pulled out from there. And its still not clear of how many people are trapped inside yet.

Dozens of people have been rescued and are safely evacuated from a market and a seven-floor building that was badly damaged, A bank building also collapsed , but no injuries were reported, the building complex included a care center for newborns and mothers and apparently military personnel carrying large shovels are doing the rescue mission ,  one of  the Local media reported.
