Heating Honey can lead to toxic effects!!

    No doubt, honey has got super healing properties and is widely used for its medicinal effects. Some of its uses are as follows:

    •  Honey is very good for eyes and eye sight.
    •  It puts of thirst.
    •  It reduces effects of poison.
    •  It stops hiccups.
    •  It cleanses and heals the wounds.
    •  Apart from it, it is very useful in urinary tract disorders, worm infestations, bronchial asthma, cough, diarrhoea and nausea, vomiting.
    • Stored and old honey helps in metabolism of fat and removes Kapha.
    • It is also used as as source of carbohydrates.
    • It also removes sunburns and de-tan the skin.

    These health benefits of consuming honey comes from the essential nutrients it contains such as vitamins, minerals, probiotics (Lactobacillus kunkeei), enzymes, antioxidants, and some amino acids. 

    But consuming honey in incorrect ways can lead to adverse effects on the body. One should be careful when consuming honey.

    • It should not be mixed with hot foods.
    • It should not be heated.
    • One should not consume honey when working in hot environment.
    • Honey should never be mixed with rain water, hot, spicy foods, fermented beverages (whisky, rum, brandy) ghee, mustard as it becomes poisonous.
    • It should not be consumed with boiling water or tea.

    Honey when used as a sweetener in herbal tea or hot lemon water, the liquids should be allowed to cool at 40 degree Celsius and then mixed to prevent the honey from becoming toxic.

    There are many food combinations that produce toxic effects, but heated honey surpasses the all as heated honey is difficult to clean. Heating honey destroys the enzymes. When honey is heated, the molecule become like wax and adheres to mucous membrane. Heating honey has deleterious effects as heat makes it indigestible. 

    Next time when you consume honey, you better be aware before falling prey to its toxic effects.
