India Successfully Test-fires Agni-5


    India added one more medal in its achievements by test firing the Agni-5 successfully from the Kalam Island off Odisha Coast, which is till now India’s longest range nuclear capable missile. It is capable of targeting the goal within 5,000 km in mere 20 minutes. It is an inter-continental surface-to-surface ballistic missile developed by Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), possessing new technology for navigation and guidance.

    With the success of Agni-5, India has become the fifth member of the team of the countries to develop an inter-continental surface-to-surface ballistic missile of ranging 5,000km. It has succeeded America, Russia, France, Britain and China in the race.

    It is significant because:

    • China, Pakistan, Russia, Malaysia and Indonesia come under its range.
    • Agni-5 has a range of over 5,000km and can carry about 1,000kg in warhead. The solid propellant driven missile will be tested from a canister which gives it all-weather and any terrain mobile launch capability.
    • Agni-5 is a fire-and-forget system that cannot be easily detected as it follows a ballistic trajectory.
    • Agni-5 weighs about 50 tonnes and is 17-metre long with modern weapon system.
    • It is easily transportable and cannot be detected easily.
    • 85% of the technique used in the development is vernacular. It was the fourth test in the series. It costs about 2500 crores rupees. It will undergo its final test under Strategic Forces Command (SFC).
    • The SFC is acquainted with Agni-I, Agni-II and Agni-III missiles, apart from the shorter-range Prithvi and Dhanush missiles, 

    The Agni-6 is in the early stages of development which is the latest and most advanced version and is capable of being launched from submarines as well as from land. It is reported to have strike-range of 8,000-10,000 km.

    Pakistan has only reached Shaheen-3 having strike range of 2750km. It is working on Taimur missile possessing range as that of Agni-5.
