The Board of Control for Cricket in India President , Anurag Thakur has expressed his anguish to all the members about the “frivolous comments” against the Indian Premier League (IPL) and league labelled as an extravaganza.

Since its inception in the year 2008 , the IPL had grown gradually and paid around Rs 2,244 Crore directly in various taxes over the period of 9 years.

He also pointed out that the State Associations had been paid around Rs 2, 406 Crore from the IPL Profits and hence these profits could be used for the further enhancement and development of the game.

He also mentions “How could one question about the impact of IPL on the Indian Economy to be just Rs. 1,150 Crore whereas we pay Rs 2,650 Crore to the Indian GDP besides other benefits in terms of employment opportunities!”.

He also emphasized that “Indian Premier League” is the ‘world’s most watched’ Cricket League and the 6th most popular sports league on Earth which had “attracted fans of all the age groups , gender , demographics and has a global appeal”.

“This is the most sought after property by the advertisers! Infact , 13 cricketers who had played well in the IPL had gone on to play for the nation!” he adds on.

He said that he has been mentioning these hard facts just to counter effect the negative comments he has been receiving about IPL and also sought the wisdom of board of members to decide on “whether to stop this so called extravaganza or not?”
