Today 40 Indian fisher mans are released by Sri Lankan authorities who are arrested by Sri Lankan navy for illegally fishing in Lankan waters.
Two Sri Lankan courts today ordered the release of 40 fishermen arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy for allegedly fishing in the island’s territorial waters in June.
An official of the Indian Consulate General in Jaffna told that while the Point Pedro Magistrate released 26 fishermen who had been in detention since June 21, the Mannar Magistrate released 14. The latter had been in detention since June 1.
The official added that Sri Lankan authorities were now working out procedures on handing over these fishermen to the Indian authorities.
