The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made it very clear that the teachers working in the schools affiliated to it should not be allowed or engaged into activities which could be termed as “non academic” , as it loses out on the productivity towards enhancing student’s overall academic performance.

Only those activities which fall under teaching , examinations , evaluations and professional enhancements could be assigned to those teachers , other than that they must be kept away from such activities.

There was a circular by the CBSE to its affiliated schools which says “Any tasks or activities related to transportation , canteen and of administration or ministerial in nature should not be done by those teachers dealing with academics , for such purpose the work should be done by the  separate staff who are trained in this and could be deployed by the schools.”

This decision was made by the CBSE after knowing plights of several CBSE teachers across the nation that they were forced into such non academic activities. In the academic year 2014-15 , teachers in the urban areas were spending around 17 days out of 224 days in non teaching area , where as in rural areas , teachers spent just 9 days out of 224 days in such activities.

One of the teachers of Kendriya Vidyalaya , Bengaluru , shares her non teaching experience , “Many a times we have been called for the meetings which does not deal with our teaching profession , and inevitably those are scheduled during the school hours!”

This CBSE Circular points to the Section 27 of Act 2009 , which goes as “Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009” and hence which also means that “no teacher should be deployed to do any non teaching or non educational tasks other than disaster relief duties or decennial population census!”

Earlier , CBSE circulated a mandatory thing , which stated that “atleast 1 teacher must be present in the school bus for the safety of the students” and now with this amendment , it says “atleast 1 woman attendant or woman security person must be there in the school bus for the safety and security  of the students!”
