Tollywood Popular Actress 'Kanakam' Passes Away


One of the earliest actresses in the history of Tollywood movie industry, T Kanakam has passed away in this morning (22nd July,2015) at her Vijayawada residence. She was 88 years old. This popular actress Kanakam was born in Kharagpur, West Bengal in 1927. But later she was moved to Vijayawada. She was suffering from several old age related problems or suffering from health-related issues for a long time and breathed her last today. T Kanakam had been ailing for the past few years. Kanakam played various roles in the movies of NTR, ANR, Shobhan Babu and Krishna,Haranath and others.


The legendary actress Kanakam started out her career from as a singer in All India Radio as voice for Aakashavani Balala programme during her childhood, and later she was enters into films, her first film is Gruhapravesam in 1946. Kanakam’s last film was 1967 film Bhakta Prahlada. The AP government honored Kanakam with the Nandamuri Taraka Ramarao (NTR) Award in 2004.

Kanakam’s popular movies are Gunasundari Katha, Keelu Gurram, Pathala Bhairavi, Raksharekha, Leta Manasulu, Shavukaru, Dasi and Bhakta Prahlada.

“The veteran actress started her career as a folk singer in All India Radio at a young age. Later she gained popularity for playing the character of Nayakuralu Nagamma in Palnati Yuddham and Sri Krishna in Kurukshetram dramas.” said, Stage Artiste Vemula Nageswara Sarma, at the felicitation function.
