Why we need more unapologetic feminists.

Feminism. How much this word has been harassed over the past many generations. Many of my female friends would agree on the same. Recalling in on a very old incident, I was once traveling via Delhi metro when one guy “accidentally” brushed his hand through my behind. Being the very aggressive person I  started questioning him and he was pretty non chalant about it, just laughing at me and saying “Arre madam aapko har jagah feminism kyu dikhana hai? Galti hogai jaane do”

I was shocked and taken aback like anything at the same time. The audacity with which that guy spoke made me more determined on being adamant on the fact that we still need more feminists in our country and to make that happen we need to make people stop misusing the word “Feminism”.

Feminism does not give anyone the right to abuse your counterpart in public, neither does it allow you to cheat in a relationship. It is all about protecting the rights of people who are suppressed due to the patriarchal society and it’s norms. Feminism is all about being compassionate and nurturing to those who have been deprived of affection all through their lives.

We need more feminists. Feminists who strive to fight against injustice irrespective of the gender they are fighting for. We don’t need females fighting for seats in buses or metros, we need them to fight against female foeticide and dowry killing. We need women who are equal to men, and not above them. We need women who will pull others up and not push them down. Because we can never have enough feminists as long as daughters are still considered a bane in this country.
