Nobody likes to wear an ill-fitting sports bra. A particular clothing item that has evolved over time, the sports bra’s importance is undeniable. However, many women carelessly pick and buy a sports bra that might be the perfect fit. This can be blamed on certain factors like a tight budget, misleading advertisement or lack of information otherwise.

The fit of a ladies sports bra is extremely important. Honestly, the consequences of wearing a bad fitting sports bra can be worse than just an itchy feeling on your skin. They can range from basic discomfort to chafing materials, digging straps, bouncing pain, tense shoulders, clothing rash and even restricted breathing.

Plus, wearing a bra that fits you properly has a deep effect on your self-esteem.

As reported by The New York Times, a recent study conducted by the Biomechanics Research Laboratory at the University of Wollongong in Australia found a correlation between breast size and regular exercise. Women with larger breasts felt more discouraged from working out. Out of the women that were a part of the study, 46% stated that their breast size affected their exercise routine.

Selecting the Correct Type of Sports Bra for Yourself

One of the top cons while purchasing a sports bra is buying the wrong bra. Many women will end up buying a sports bra with a smaller cup size but a larger band size. So, if you thought you were the only one facing this problem, think again.

According to LaJean Lawson, Ph.D. and adjunct professor of exercise and sport science at Oregon State University, only 15 to 20 per cent of women are wearing the best bra for their shape. This basically shows us that even though women are well aware of their sports bra size, they fail to figure out which bra would suit them for their requirements.

Here’s what we think:

Compression or encapsulation?

  • Compression: Shelf bra styles work better for smaller cup sizes (A and B) or for those doing low to moderate-impact workouts.
  • Encapsulation: Sports bras with individual cups are better for larger-breasted women than compression-style sports bras.

Racerback or wide straps?

  • Racerback: If you’re looking for support, then go in for a racerback. This is because they cinch in back making the straps anchor the bra closer to the body.
  • Wide straps: Preferable for those with larger cups. The shoulder straps basically help distribute bust weight better than T-back bras and are generally adjustable and padded.

Pullover or back clasp?

  • Pullover: Tank style sports bras generally cover the back more than clasps. However, stretchable ones lack rigid front straps, adjustability and support to anchor large chests.
  • Back clasp: Back clasps allow you to tighten the band which provides 70 percent of the bra’s support. This is especially vital for larger breasts, which place more demand on the band.

Knowing the type of sports bra you need and your correct size is sometimes not enough. When shopping for a sports bra to fit your needs, always keep in mind the purpose of the bra. Try out a few sizes before going in for one because fittings may vary from brand to brand.
